June is an exciting month in the garden with growth well under way and the gardeners busy planting the annual borders and ornamental potager. Last year an American Prairie, one of only a handful outside America and containing 70 species grown from seed at Cambo, was created through the Woodland Garden beyond the Potting Shed. Although we are not expecting it to flower until later in the season, do go and have a look.
WOODLANDS EDGE (1) This planting consists of the lovely dark blue detailed flowers of Iris siberica together with the white plumes of Aruncus dioicus and pink Persicaria bistorta ‘Superba’.
CALENDAR BED (2) Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ and purple Thalictrum aquilegifolium combine in this steppe like planting. The pink plant reminiscent of a geranium is Erodium Manescavii.
STEPPE PLANTING (3) The tall plant with large leaves scattered through the planting is Phlomis tuberosa ‘Amazone’ and the blue spikes are Salvia nemerosa.
THE ANNUALS (4) These colour themed beds consist of a combination of annuals, tender perennials and grasses and will be planted during June.
TRADITIONAL BORDER (5) A modern reworking of a traditional herbaceous border with traditional favourites such as Paeonias, Delphiniums, Penstemons and Geraniums..
MOIST AREA (6) This area is currently under renovation.
CUT FLOWER AREA (7) Amongst the first wave of flowering plants is Cirsium rivulare ‘Atropurpureum’ with its red thistle like flowers. See also the red spangle flowers of Heuchera ‘Firefly’ and the pure white flowers of Asphodelus albus.
WOODLAND BORDER (8) Woodland grass Luzula nivea lightens up the planting this month as do the handsome leaves of Rodgersia and the pleated leaves of Veratrum.
MIXED BORDER (9) Designed two years ago this border is really starting to establish. We planted some traditional plants together with some prairie perennials and grasses to give a modern twist.
EARLY FLOWERING BORDER (10) The short red flower is Astrantia major ‘Claret’, the plant with white flowers and narrow leaves is Libertia ixioides and the blue tall slender spikes are Camassia.
NATURALISTIC POTAGER (11) This year we are adding much more blue to the colour mix of this ornamental vegetable garden and planting in a diffused mingled style. The potager is being planted this month.
POTAGER ENTRANCE BEDS (12) These beds form the transition between what will be the rich colours of the potager and the other plantings in the area.
LATE DOUBLE BORDER (13) Here the pink Chaerophyllum hirsutum ‘Rosea’ combine with the Astrantia major ‘Claret’ In this first wave of planting’
