AUGUST
This month is the flowering peak of the garden due to our late season naturalistic emphasis.
WOODLANDS EDGE (1) The ball forms of Echinops bounce around alongside teasels.
CALENDAR BED (2) These plants hare been selected for their transparent qualities. Lythrum virgatum is reminiscent of our native Willowherb. The red and cool pastel button like flowers of Knautia jostle playfully with the grasses and other plants.
STEPPE PLANTING (3) This drier grassland planting brings together the architectural purple flowers of Acanthus spinosus with the white ball flowers of Echinops sphaerocephalus ‘Arctic Glow’.
THE ANNUALS (4) These colour themed plantings were finished last month and are just fattening up. We rely on these beds to supply us with plenty of late colour right up to the first frosts.
TRADITIONAL BORDER (5) The foamy plumes of Filipendula rubra ‘Venusta’ and the blue spires of Veronica spicata give way to Anemone x hybrida and Eupatorium cannabinum. Persicaria amplexicaule ‘Firetail’ adds a large splash of red.
MOIST AREA (6) This leafy jungle of a planting is getting a bit overgrown and is due for redevelopment but is still fun. However, opposite this area (behind the annual beds) is the new hot border. The Heleniums provide the real depth of colour to this border.
CUT FLOWER AREA (7) This eclectic mix of plants supplies the house and apartments with cut flowers throughout the year. The tall oat like grass is Stipa gigantea.
WOODLAND BORDER (8) It is a quiet month for the woodland with an emphasis on foliage. Next month will see a late flush with Actaea and Tricytis.
MIXED BORDER (9) Here foliage shrubs and roses mingle with a mix of mid and late season perennials. The red ball like flowers are Monarda didyma ‘Adam’ and we have added some prairie plants and grasses to give it a modern twist.
EARLY FLOWERING BORDER (10) This collection of smaller beds gives many ideas for smaller beds. Purple foliage is supplied by Aster lateriflorus ‘Lady in Black’ and the small white daisies are Kalimeris incisa which go so well with the large pink daisies of Echinacea purpurea.
NATURALISTIC POTAGER (11) The potager fattens up this, month moving towards its peak in September. This year’s theme has a strong emphasis on blue. The idea for this years potager was inspired by Monet’s painting ‘The Waterlillies’.
POTAGER ENTRANCE BEDS (12) This month these borders are dominated by the large white daisy of Leucanthemum x superbum.
LATE DOUBLE BORDER (13) These naturalistic borders reach their flowering peak this month and next. The white daisies are Aster umbellatus. The repeated pinkish mauve spikes are Lythrum virgatum ‘Rosy Gem’. The round blue flower is Monarda didyma ‘Aquarius’.
NEW - HOT BORDER Designed two years ago this border is really starting to come into its own.
