Snowdrop Festival

27 January to 11 March 2018
Snowdrop Festival
Our annual Snowdrop Spectacular!
Open daily 10am to 5pm
Entry - Adults £5.50 Children go FREE!

The annual event, now in its 11th year, aims to encourage locals and tourists alike to enjoy the wonders of Scotland’s gardens during the snowdrop flowering period and highlight the diversity of the country’s array of snowdrop collections.
Supported by VisitScotland, the festival is being organised for the first time this year by garden tourism organisation Discover Scottish Gardens.
Catherine Erskine, Chair of Discover Scottish Gardens, founder of the Snowdrop Festival in Scotland and trustee of Cambo Gardens, said:
“We are very lucky in Scotland to have a fantastic climate for snowdrops, with many species thriving here and creating stunning displays. And this year, due to a mild winter, snowdrops are certainly popping their heads out earlier than they have for many years.”

From 27 January to 11 March Cambo Gardens will be hosting events and activities for all ages and interests as part of the Scottish Snowdrop Festival. Key events are the launch event ‘Imbolc family bonfire party’ on 1 February at 4pm [PHOTCALL 5.30PM]. Imbolc is a Gaelic traditional festival marking the beginning of spring, halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. The event will celebrate the lengthening days with warming crafts, music, parade, bonfire and snowdrop sausage sizzle!

During the school half term families will be invited to create imaginative feats of art and engineering using natural materials to create something to float, hang or move as part of our STEAM snowdrop SPECTACULAR design challenge! Other events include snowdrop sketch walks through the woodlands, wildcraft activities for families and a course with Head Gardener Elliott Forsyth in designing a modern Winter Garden.

National Collection of Snowdrops

Cambo Gardens is the home of the national collection of snowdrops with over 300 varieties to see with differences in flower shapes, markings and size from the very tiny ‘Little Dancer’ to the large famous ‘Grumpy’ variety with scowling markings! During the snowdrop festival visitors can enjoy a daily tour with gardeners to highlight the varieties and history of the unique collection.

Cambo Snowdrops – selling snowdrops ‘in the green’

Famous for its Snowdrop Woods since the 1930’s, Cambo Gardens is the home of the thriving Cambo Snowdrops business. It is here that Lady Catherine Erskine set up the snowdrop mail order business selling bulbs ‘in the green' in 1986 having read articles recommending planting snowdrops in leaf rather than the traditional dried bulbs in autumn. The business was first recommended by Gardening Which as Best Supplier of Bulbs 'in the green' in 1998, is continuously receiving accolades for quality of product and service and now receives orders and enquiries from all over the world.

During February and March the team of horticulturalists at Cambo dispatch over 10000 snowdrops with the largest order being for 50000!  You can see the team hard at work surrounded by thousands of snowdrops at the Stables Visitor Centre during February and March. ‘Galanthophiles’ (fans of ‘galanthus’ – snowdrops) can pay in excess of £100 for rare varieties.
